Meet E.G. and Joe Braswell

Braswell Family Spotlight

Meet E.G. and Joe Braswell. These brothers grew up working hard alongside one another on their family's small farm and at Boddie’s Mill for Mr. G.M. Strickland. In 1943, Mr. Strickland, tired from years of his own hard work owning Nashville Building Supply, approached the Braswell brothers to see if they would like to purchase the mill from him. Indeed, they did and so began Braswell Family Farms.

E.G. and Joe bought the mill on credit from Mr. Strickland until they were able to raise enough funds to pay it off. They worked tirelessly grinding corn meal that was used for baking and frying throughout the Nashville, Rocky Mount, Red Oak and Spring Hope communities. Although they ran an efficient operation, E.G. and Joe never worked on Sunday. Every Saturday night at midnight they would shut down the mill for 24 hours until they resumed the following night at midnight.

In 1950, E.G. and Joe acquired a flour mill from Warren Milling Company in the heart of Nashville, NC. The brothers continued to run the mill when E.G.'s sons, Gene and Ronald, returned from serving in the military. The team of four worked alongside one another at the new milling location for ten years while also beginning construction on a new, modern feed mill.

The new feed mill boasted state-of-the art equipment and included hammer mills and grinders to allow for the production of custom-grind feed. The mill was completed in 1969, just three months after E.G. Braswell passed away. Today, the our milling operation stands in the same location, having been upgraded to maintain the Braswells’ standards for the highest quality feed.

Joe Braswell passed away in the early 1980s after stepping down to let his nephews continue the business that he and his brother created. We are thankful for the contributions that E.G. and Joe Braswell made to our company. Without them, we truly would not be where we are today!
